I do not remember the
exact time when I started to mark the date on which I was born. Probably, it
happened when I was in high school. Having celebrated my own birthday and the
birthday of my friends over the years, I have made few general observations
during my School and College days. A typical birthday celebration in a boarding
School looks something like this. By the time clock strikes 12 midnight, you
will start to receive messages from your well-wishers. Remember, this applies
only if you have a girlfriend, boyfriend or someone close to you in high school
because they want to be the first one to wish you. Rest of the birthday wishes
will follow when you distribute sweets in your class. The most common birthday
gift you receive will be a Cup or a Photo album along with a wishing card.
Birthday celebrations in
College are similar but not same with extra features. When clock strikes 12
midnight, your close friends will come to your room, pull your blanket to
startle you with an elaborate cake with a candle in the dark and happy birthday
song. All of it is meant to be a surprise but I think most of the people remember
their own birthday and know what to expect unless they are loner. The practice
of blowing the candle before cutting the cake is ironical in country where
butter lamp lightning practice is common. The next day, the birthday boy or
girl would distribute sweets as usual and will have to sponsor either lunch or
dinner to selected few individuals who are close. You cannot sponsor everyone
unless you want to stay broke afterwards. Isn’t it a strange practice that a
birthday boy or girl have to sponsor on their special day? Having said that,
there are no written rules which says that a birthday boy or girl will have to
sponsor but this is how it used to work those days. Now to share my own high
school birthday experience:
On my 19th
birthday, I got birthday messages from few special individuals in my mobile at
midnight. Oh, we were prohibited from carrying mobile in school but we had our
ways to bring in this forbidden fruit. We would use mobile only at night and
the gadget would remain switched off most of the time. I was amazed to know
that some people knew my birth date and even sacrificed their sleep to wish me
because I never share the particular personal information with anyone. My
roommates knew about my birthday only in the morning when I gave them sweets.
As they received the sweets, they hugged me and wished me. Later, I also distributed
birthday sweets to my classmates and managed to get few cups and albums. During
lunch time, I sneaked outside the school compound with a friend to purchase
junk foods and juice for the night. The real birthday celebration started only
at night, right after the Warden called it a day after his daily night patrol
and left home.
My birthday celebration
was no different than the birthday celebrations of my two roommates before me.
Right after our Warden left us, my friends put on the room light and they began
to prepare the room for my birthday. I was spared since it was my day. They did
not buy balloons deliberately. Instead condoms were hung around our metal beds
since it was free. Or so we thought at the time. They put the glittery thing
inside the condom though. There was no birthday hat too. Once they were done
setting the rooms with condoms, I was invited in the center. Then my roommates sang
“Happy Birthday” song and pierced a condom right over my head when they
finished the song. All the glitter inside the condom fell over my head followed
by an applause. I thanked all my eight roommates for taking the trouble and
placed a bag full of junk foods and fizzy drinks on the table. There were fish
curries, kurkures, kontos, wawai, cokes and fantas. All of us feasted on the imported
junk foods telling ourselves in a hilarious tone - the night is still young.
